Sunset Oceanfront Lodging, formerly
"Sunset Motel," has been a familly-run business for over 70 years. These assorted guest accommodations now include 63 lodging rooms,
recreational amenities and seven beach Cottages for nightly
rental. 1936-1938
Just after the
1936 fire that devastated Bandon and destroyed their home, the Browns
acquired a parcel on the bluff in West Bandon that boasted a spectacular
view of the legendary Face Rock and
several sea stacks. Herb and his son, Vern built two small
duplexes side by side, each with a front unit facing the ocean that
could be rented out. Herb and Clara lived in one of the back
units. In 1948 Vern
and his wife, Mabel, lived in the other. After World War 11, the
family connected the two buildings with a row of rooms, forming a
U-shape with six apartments and eight sleeping rooms.
In the late 1950"s the rooms were
renovated at a cost of $12,500, but a fire of unknown
origin claimed
1950's
two-thirds of the structure in 1960, causing an estimated $75,000
damage. For a while, only two apartments and four sleeping rooms
remained.

Undaunted,Vern Brown rebuilt and enlarged the business creating 17

units for year round tourist
accommodations. The family has added new portions every decade since. A row
of six lodging rooms were built in 1977.
Vern's daughter Judy and
her Husband Carl Densmore took over
operations in the mid
1980"s. In addition to the lodging rooms, they rented Beach Cottages along a two mile stretch of
the bluff.
The next major undertaking was the Vern H.
Brown Addition, a three story, 21-unit structure West of the
bluff. Judy,s sons, Bryan and
Jeffery Longland grew up helping their grandfather at the Resort. After
finishing college, they returned with Jeff's wife Holly to join in managing the business and designing the latest addition, 18 Ocean View
Studios with an indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, a spacious lobby and
offices.
1999-2000
